Do you want to be a student tutor?

Thank you for your interest in being a student tutor and enthusiasm in sharing with international students coming to USM.

Please review the following requirements before applying:

  • Real interest | You must be truly motivated to learn about another culture and be a host in Chile (it is not necessary to have gone to exchange).

  • Be here | You must be present at the University for various activities (e.g.: personal interviews, informational meetings, and orientation day).

  • Third year or higher | You must be a senior student.

  • Languages | You must have an intermediate level of English and ideally speak another language.

  • Extra Plus | For tutors at Casa Central, being a resident of the Valparaiso Region is desirable, but not exclusive.

  • New Friends | In addition to making friends with foreign students, you will meet other Sansanos and Sansanas who are part of the Tutoring Program and who have the same cultural interests as you.

  • FAE | Tutoring Students may receive FAE (Factor of Extracurricular Activities), depending on the evaluation of their performance.

  • Value to the curriculum | Being a tutor implies responsibility, seriousness, interpersonal skills, and much more.

Responsibilities

Besides being their friend and introducing them to the fun things about Chile and the University, there are also some other official things you have to accomplish as a tutor:

  • Contacting them prior to the trip | Direct contact with a Sansano or Sansana is one of the most important for exchange students prior to their trip to Chile. You will have the commitment to make the contact at least 10 weeks before Orientation Day’s date.
  • Accompany them during the Orientation Day and official procedures | You will meet your tutored buddies during Orientation Day and will be their guide during all activities that week (e.g. campus tour, visa registration, obtaining an identity card, among others).
  • Courses registration | You will show them how to choose courses according to their needs, how to use SIGA, AULA, the Portal Autoservicio, among others.
  • Teach them precaution | You will share useful safety tips, so that they know what is already a habit for you (which streets or neighborhoods to avoid, how to take care of your belongings, etc.).

Does it sound like a lot? Remember, you won’t be alone: DAI will also give you a guide with everything you need to know to be a Student Tutor.

How to apply?
  • Online, by completing the application form available here.

  • Group interview, pre-selected students will be notified to schedule an interview.

  • Quotas, we seek to maintain a maximum ratio of 1:5 buddy tutors per exchange students, always based on to the number of incoming students and the number of applicants to the Tutoring Program each semester.

  • Willingness to help, while knowing another language and where to find the best empanadas in Valparaíso are points on your favor, it is not everything. We want student tutors who really want to help students on their arrival, including the more bureaucratic (and less entertaining) procedures such as civil registration and immigration.
